No Smoking for Seniors: A Major Reason for Living Healthy

Whether you are a man or womanif you continue to smoke in your old age, you are under increased risks of hip fractures. A hip fracture is not an ordinary issue. In the USA, you will find more than 300,000 hip fracture cases among people over the age of sixty-five. The most serious concern is that a patient with a hip fracture is 12% to 20% more likely to die than those who do not have a hip fracture. If you are a woman, you are exposed to even greater risk factors because smoking reduces bone density among menopausal women.

Your chances of developing cataracts and COPD are also increased by many times. Then smoking causes serious visual impairment by causing nuclear cataracts of the lens of the eye, in both men and women. It may ultimately lead to blindness. If you are a senior and a smoker at the same time, you run two to three times greater risk of developing cataracts than a nonsmoker.

Now consider the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, more commonly known as COPD. This is a highly debilitating chronic condition that gradually puts a standstill to your daily activities. Smoking exacerbates the condition. In fact, COPD is highest in those men and women who continue with smoking beyond 65 years of age.

You have to quit smoking if you want a happy and healthy life all through your retirement days. Smoking is nothing but a habit that can be given up at any age. Quitting smoking is a slow process, and you cannot give up a habit of so many years right away. If you seriously make up your mind to quit smoking, it does not have to take that much time, at least compared to the time over which this bad habit has been built up.

Before you indulge in a quit-smoking process, you have to learn how the addiction towards smoking develops? It becomes an addiction when the lighting up of a cigarette becomes your way of responding to all of your emotions and physical needs. Feeling happy? Lets light up a cigarette to celebrate the moment of joy! Feeling terribly down? Lets calm the pain with a bit of smoking! There are those smokers who would light up a cigarette even when they feel hungry! This is nothing but unconscious slavery to the habit of getting stimulation with regard to all physical or mental activities.

The process of quitting can precisely teach you how to suppress the urge of lighting up a cigarette by responding to the urge and taking up a harmless activity. For example, when you feel the urge to smoke a little because you are feeling hungry, you actually have to eat a meal, instead of lighting up the cigar. Similarly, when you need to stimulate your brain by smoking a cigarette because you are feeling sleepy, just go ahead and have a little nap. This will refresh your brain.

It is not easy to start subsiding the urge to smoke by opting for more healthy choices, but it is not impossible either. You have to be patient with yourself! At first you may experience some difficulty in suppressing your urge to light up a cigarette, but as you become accustomed to this process of suppression, you experience less and less of an urge to smoke. Ultimately, the time will come when the cigarettes will fail to tempt you anymore, and that will be the beginning of a healthier and happier retired life.
