Routine Medical Checkups for Seniors

By Charles Hopkins Published 11/2/2006 | Health

Just look at Sean Connery and think of the level of fitness he enjoys even at his age! Who said it is not possible for you to attain the same level of grace and independence? As you know, the key to happiness in old age is good health, but what is the secret behind impeccable health? According to the United States Preventive Services Task Force, some simple tests at regular intervals can ensure a happy, healthy, and safe retired life. The tests recommended by United States Preventive Services Task Force are the collection of some simple tests that can be done in the presence of your regular doctor. The doctor, however, may recommend a few more tests based on your overall health.

Check with your weight regularly

Most of the people gain in pounds considerably as they advance in their age. Have you wondered why? This is because of the ripple effects of old age. As you grow old, the metabolic rate slows, then muscles are increasingly replaced by fat as you grow older. All these fats are mainly accumulated in the area of the waist. As such, you may start to put on weight. If you start gaining weight in an uncontrolled fashion, it may prove detrimental to your health. It is important to step on the scale regularly.

Take Care of your Blood Pressure

We all know the implications of high blood pressure on our health, but we do not know when it starts to take a turn in the wrong direction. It is important to keep regular tabs on your blood pressure level. So get your blood pressure checked by your doctor regularly. Not only your heart, but other vital organs like the brain, eyes, and kidneys will also benefit from this regular care.

Prevent breast cancer through regular examination

The women in their forties and the women after menopause become particularly susceptible to the attack of breast cancer. To avoid such a tragedy, you have to go for annual mammogram and doctor's breast exam. However if you are a woman over forty you are strongly recommended to take up mammogram every one to two years.

Make sure to get Rectal Exam once a year

Some people get panicked with the idea of getting their rectums examined. It is a simple process and an effective one. The rectal exam, along with a fecal occult blood test (FOBT), will let you know of the invisible presence of masses. Rectal examination, along with a few other tests, can confirm whether you are having any treatable problems in your colon or prostate if you are a man. This exam considerably reduces the risk of colon cancer.

This test does not leave any scope of doubts. Colonoscopy is one of series of colon tests that can be performed to detect colon cancer. A colonoscopy is recommended to be done every 10 years once you reach at the age of 50. However, if you run the higher risk factors you may be advised to take up colonoscopy at an early age and more frequently.

Pelvic Exam and Pap Smear For Women:

The women over 60 needs to have regular pelvic exams and Pap smears as the women in this age group run greater risk of developing cervical cancer or vaginal cancer. This test also can detect other conditions that may seriously affect the quality of your living in future.

These are some basic medical checkups for both men and women that should be done on a regular basis if you want to throw a challenge to the growing age and lead a fit and active lifestyle.
