Former France midfielder Youri Djorkaeff has announced that he will play for the MetroStars in United States Major League Soccer for one season.
Glittering path
Djorkaeff had been looking for a club after leaving English side Blackburn Rovers FC in December. The 36-year-old will follow the path taken by another FIFA World Cup winner, current Hungary coach and former German international, Lothar Matthäus, who also ended his career in New York with the MetroStars.
'A tremendous person'
"We are extremely excited to bring Youri to the MetroStars and Major League Soccer," said head coach Bob Bradley. "Youri's experience with the French national team and some of the best clubs in the world will be invaluable to our team. Above all, he is a tremendous person and is truly motivated for this new challenge in his career."
The Snake
The player, who earned the nickname 'The Snake' during an illustrious European career, had been sidelined for two months at Blackburn because of injuries, but is expected to be ready to compete when the 2005 MLS season begins on 1 April.
French triumphs
The Lyon-born player was a UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winner with Paris Saint-Germain FC in 1995/96 and a UEFA Cup winner with FC Internazionale Milano in 1997/98. His best moments, however, came with victories at the 1998 World Cup and UEFA EURO 2000™ with France, for whom he scored 28 goals in 82 games.
