The European continent comprises the westernmost
peninsula of Eurasia. It is mainly separated from Asia
by the watersheds of the Ural as well as the Caucasus
Mountains, the Ural River and the Caspian and Black
Europe’s northern boundary touches the Arctic Ocean in the north, the Atlantic Ocean in the west, the Mediterranean Sea in the south, and the Black Sea and other waterways in the southeast.
It is one of the world’s smallest continents by surface area, covering about 10,200,000 square kilometers i.e., 2% of the surface of the earthand about 7% of its land. Europe has a population of about 740 million, i.e., 11% of the world's population. Europe mainly lies in the temperate climate zones and is subjected to the westerlies. Europe is a peninsula which makes up the fifth of the Eurasian landmass.
The southern Europe is more mountainous, while in
north the terrains descend from the Alp Mountains,
Pyrenees, and Carpathians, in the broad and low northern
The North German Plains are extended lowland of the Great European Plain. There are sub-regions like the Iberian Peninsula and the Italian Peninsula.
The mainland Central Europe contains many plateaus, basins and river valleys. The sub-regions include Iceland, Britain, and Ireland.
