North America continent is situated completely within the Northern Hemisphere. It is surrounded by the Arctic Ocean in the north, the Atlantic Ocean in the east, by the Pacific Ocean in both west and south and has South America and the Caribbean Sea to its southeast.
This subcontinent is the third largest continent by
area after Asia as well as Africa. It covers about 5% of
the planet's surface and 17% of the land area.
North America is connected to South America through the Isthmus of Panama. The Caribbean islands are considered to be a part of North America.
The region had been underwater, before the Central American isthmus emerged.The continent’s coastline is very long but irregular. The Gulf of Mexico is the biggest water body present in the continent, the Hudson Bay being the second largest.
The Gulf of Saint Lawrence as well as the Gulf of California are the other two major water bodies.The world’s largest island Greenland, is situated on the same tectonic plate of North American and is considered to be a part of North America.
The mountain ranges include the Rockies range and the coastal ranges ofWashington, California,Oregon and British Columbia. The Great Basin is a low area which contains smaller ranges as well as some low-lying deserts. Denali in Alaska is the highest peak in North America.
