Get your résumé right

In professional world, you have to have that edge to beat your competition. Many people sweat over creating their résumé, often having very little clue as to how to go about it. It should be understood that résumé is critical to your chances of getting a job. Any person hiring would not spend too much time on your résumé. So you have to make most of the very few seconds you get.

It is no crime not to know how to create a résumé as long as you are willing to learn. Following is a quick guide to going about creating a résumé that makes you stand out from the crowd.

  • The first thing you need to clearly mention in your resume are your contact details. It should include your name, mailing address, phone numbers and email address. If you are providing the URL of your own website, make sure it does not contain anything too personal that doesnt fit in with a job application procedure. You might be repeating your contact details already stated in your cover letter, but that acts as a cover in case your resume gets separated from your letter.
  • Try and use third person while writing your resume and stay away from first person pronouns like I and me. Otherwise your language should be attractive and positive but not very complicated. Keep it as lucid as possible. It is advisable that you dont use jargons and buzzwords.
  • Use a summary for your resume where you can condense and convey what you are and what you want to be. This can include your professional achievements, academic successes and special skills. But remember to keep it very short and to the point. Dont beat around the bush.
  • While creating a resume you can follow different models of it. You can either use the functional model where you create your resume to emphasize more on your skills and abilities. You can always also opt for the chronological resume, where you list your jobs from the latest to the first. These days however, a new form of combination resume is being which incorporates both the functional and the chronological style. This way you can use your job descriptions to confirm your abilities.
  • If you are a fresh graduate and dont have much of job experience, then emphasize on your academics. Leave no details out, and specially market you achievements in school. Chances are you will have very little job experience. So work on your strengths.
  • While providing information about your previous jobs, dont just restrict yourself to what title and duties you had. This may be too mundane for your employer. Instead talk about your achievements. Tell your employer how you made a real difference to your previous company. And use numbers to substantiate your claims. That has more of an impact.
  • If you are applying to more than one job, you might need to customize your resume to target each company differently. All of them might not be interested in all your skill sets or all your past achievements. Customizing for specific jobs shows that you are keen on the specific job.
  • Dont try and dupe your employer providing false details about you and your achievements. Or else, if the inaccuracies are ever revealed you will lose all your credibility.
  • Once you are through with creating the resume, edit and proofread it very carefully. The slightest of spelling mistakes can result you in losing out from the race. You should get you resume proofread by someone else also, just to be doubly sure.
