Before you choose your exotic pet make sure you do some research work, try to be informed as best you can, in order to make sure this exotic pet is the right one for you and that you can make it happy by creating the adapted environment it needs.

You may get an exotic pet directly at specialized pet shops, where nowadays these kinds of pets are more and more sought after. Keep in mind that it is important to choose the right source so that you are sure your exotic pet will be healthy as well as legally purchased, for ethnical issues are also to be taken into account.

The research work on the pet you have chosen must also focus on what it kind of food it may need, for you may have to purchase special food, on what kind of house or shelter it may need, the environment it is used to, if it comes from a warm, humid or cold country. Try to gather up the as much information you can, this will also help you to prepare for any dishonest seller who might try to give you an exotic pet that is unhealthy or illegally acquired.

So now, how do you get these exotic pets, where can they be found? For obvious reasons it is not that easy, when dealing with exotic pets. The first place to look for exotic animals would be at Rescues and Shelters, you will find that there are quite a few exotic pet Rescues to choose from. The great advantage of exotic pet Rescues is that you are sure to find a healthy animal, and if probably older, the animal will be more socialized and therefore easier to adapt to. Here you may find guinea pigs, small rodents, rabbits and reptiles, while the more exotic pets will be difficult to find.

Another place to buy an exotic pet would be asking the pet shop for a special order, some specialize in exotic pets, or if not may know how you can get them. Exotic pets can also be bought online, but it is important to check before hand that the dealer is reputable and that the animals he sells are healthy. It is also essential to find out if the kind of exotic pet you wish for needs a special permit, if you can have it right away, or if a waiting period is necessary. Should you have doubts on the online dealer, always refer to a pet shop you or someone else knows to be serious in the field.

So do keep in mind that whatever the source, the more information you can gather on your exotic pet the less risks you will incur in.
