The greatest moment in the\nhistory of the people of Israel was enacted when the Lord parted the waters of\nthe Red Sea to allow the fleeing Israelites to escape from the clutches of the\noppressive Egyptian king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the Israelite’s saw the awesome power of God destroy the pursuing Egyptian army, they had faith in the Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then, led by Miriam’s tambourine, they danced and sang praises to the Lord for the great victory he had given them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But, very soon, after\nwalking into the desert of Shur, and finding no water, even after three days,\nto quench their thirst, the euphoria of the spectacular events at the Red Sea\ngradually wore off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then they reached Marah,\nand found the water they were seeking. But, to their consternation, the water\nturned out to be so bitter that it was undrinkable!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At this point, their pent\nup frustration reared its ugly head, and the Israelites reverted to their\nfavorite pastime – of grumbling. They complained to their leader, Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So, this great friend of\nGod “prayed earnestly to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of\nwood, which he threw into the water; and the water became fit to drink.” (Exo 15: 25<\/strong>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every\nmarriage, too, goes through similar phases that the Israelites experienced in\ntheir flight out of Egypt.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n First, the enthusiastic\ncourtship, wherein the man and woman are lost in the starry depths of each\nother’s eyes. Between mooning over each other and whispering sweet nothings,\nthe couple fails to notice the different facets that make up their individual\npersonalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Successful courtship is\nfollowed by blissful “flight<\/strong>”\nfrom their respective homes and families into a covenant of marriage. This is\ncelebrated with great joy and merriment, with dancing and singing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But, very soon, the\nexcitement of marriage gradually starts wearing out. The stars in the eyes get\ndimmer, and the couple starts seeing, for the first time, the negative aspects\nof each other’s character. Fault finding is the order of the day, and whispered\nsweet nothings are replaced by sharp retorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bitterness now creeps in,\nand the couple has reached the “Marah<\/strong>”\nof their marriage! But, all is not lost. Remember the piece of wood that\nsweetened the Marah of the Israelites? That piece of wood is still available\ntoday to sweeten any bitterness in your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This piece of wood is\nnothing but the Cross of Jesus Christ, the center of all mankind!
