Australia
is officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia.
This country comprises the mainland of the continent,
the island of Tasmania, and various other smaller
islands. The country's landmass covers an area of
7,620,000 square kilometres and is situated on the
Indo-Australian Plate.
It is surrounded by the Indian Ocean as well as the
Pacific oceans and is separated from Asia by the seas of
Arafura and Timor. The Tasman Sea lies in between
mainland of Australia and New Zealand. This is the
world's smallest continent which consists of The Great
Barrier Reef, the world's biggest coral reeflies nearby,
off the north-east coast.
The world's largest monolith Mount Augustus is located
in the West. At 2,228 meters above sea level, Mount
Kosciuszko in the Great Dividing Range is the highest
mountain.
Australian continent has a wide variety of landscapes.
The country consists of many tropical rainforests,
mountain ranges and dry desert in the centre. It is a
flat continent and has one of theoldest and non-fertile
soils. There are desert lands commonly called the
outbacks and these make up most of the portion of land.
It is the dries-inhabited continent with diverse
climatic conditions and varied topographical features.
