With Conakry as the capital and French as the official language, in addition to numerous local dialects, Guinea is often called the gateway to the Sahara for the highlands that give rise to some of West Africa's great rivers.

Much of Guinea’s landscape features the Fouta Djallon highlands in the north, rolling savanna in the east, and lush rainforest in the southeastern Guinée Forestière region. The Niger, Gambia and Senegal rivers all rise in Guinea's highlands, and the mountainous interior gives way to fertile coastal plains along the Atlantic.

Mount Nimba, a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Ivory Coast and Liberia, rises within the Nimba Range and is home to rare wildlife found nowhere else on Earth, including the Nimba otter shrew.

Other notable natural sites include the Kinkon Falls near Pita and the dramatic gorges and plateaus of the Fouta Djallon, where visitors can spot chimpanzees and a wide variety of bird species. A trek through the highlands, rising above 1,500 meters, offers sweeping views over plateau country often called the "Switzerland of West Africa."

In Conakry, visitors can explore the National Museum, the Grand Mosque and the lively Madina Market, along with colonial-era architecture on the city's waterfront.

The climate is tropical, with a distinct wet season from April to November and a drier season the rest of the year.
