Malawi Facts and Country Information...

The Republic of Malawi is a country in the Southeast Africa and it was previously known as Nyasaland. Lake Malawi separates this nation from Mozambique and Tanzania. Lilongwe is the capital city of Malawi and Blantyre is its biggest city. The population of the country is roughly about 13,900,000. The country depends on agriculture for its revenue and it is believed that about half of the Gross Domestic product or GDP of Malawi comes from agriculture alone. It also exports products to other countries and some of the export products are sugar, tobacco and cotton.

Not only is Malawi an extremely populated country, it is also one of the least developed countries in the world. Most of the people live in rural areas and the economy of the country is dependent on agriculture. In order to develop the economy, the Government is depending on outside aid. However, the aid offered has declined ever since the year 2000.

The inhabitants of the country are diverse and they include Natives, Europeans as well as Asians. As it has people from different cultures, the language spoken in Malawi is also wide-ranging. Many people in Malawi are infected with AIDS/HIV. Primary education is not obligatory in the country but the Constitution requires the children to be educated for at least five years.

The people from Malawi are called Malawians.
