Fiji Facts and Country Information...

The Fiji Islands are a group of islands situated in the South Pacific Ocean. There are more than 500 small islands and islets which make up the group. All the islands are volcanic in nature. The geographic coordinates of the islands are 18 degrees south latitude and 179 degrees east longitude. All the islands combined, the total area is 18,274 square kilometers all of which is land. The total coastline shared with the South Pacific Ocean amounts to a massive 1,129 kilometers.

Most of the islands are volcanic in origin with high steep rising peaks. Mount Tomanivi is the highest natural peak as it measures in at 1,324 meters above sea level. The lowest point rests at the surface of the Pacific Ocean. Only 11% of the total land area is fertile. The peaks provide partial cover for some parts of the islands, but the windward side gets all of the rain. This has caused dense tropical forests to develop in the area. The lowlands on the leeward side are dry.

The islands claim 12 nautical miles of territorial sea and a continental shelf 200 meters deep. There are more than a 100 rivers on the islands collectively and some of the most important ones are the Wailevu, Lovoni, Tavoro Creek and Somosomo Creek.
