Read the Map from West Chaco to the Paraná River

National frame

Paraguay is landlocked in the heart of South America. Bolivia borders the northwest, Brazil borders the north and east, and Argentina borders the south and southwest. Two big rivers shape the map. The Paraguay River runs north to south near the center, and the Paraná River forms much of the east and south border. The red square marks Asunción, the national capital, on the east bank of the Paraguay River.

The Chaco: three wide western departments

  • Alto Paraguay fills the far northwestern corner. On the river, you can spot Fuerte Olimpo near the Brazil line and Bahía Negra farther north. Small fort labels ring the frontier, showing how remote this zone is.

  • Boquerón lies just south of Alto Paraguay. The map highlights Mariscal Estigarribia, a key junction on the interior highway. Tracks run to frontier posts and ranch towns scattered across dry plains.

  • Presidente Hayes stretches east to the Paraguay River opposite Asunción. The corridor labels Pozo Colorado in mid-Chaco and Villa Hayes on the river. The thin red line across this desert-like plain marks the famous Trans Chaco route. Note the Tropic of Capricorn crossing this department from west to east.

North and northeast of the eastern region

  • Concepción sits just across the Paraguay River from Presidente Hayes. The city of Concepción appears on the river bend and anchors travel to the north.

  • Amambay hugs the Brazil line in the northeast. The border city of Pedro Juan Caballero stands out opposite Ponta Porã in Brazil.

  • San Pedro lies south of Concepción. The label San Pedro shows the department seat on the interior route that links to the capital region.

  • Canindeyú borders Brazil along the upper Paraguay River, also known as the Paraná. The town of Salto del Guairá appears near a tight river bend and marks a major crossing.

Central heartland around the capital

  • Asunción is the small capital district on the east bank of the Paraguay River.

  • Central wraps around Asunción. It holds the capital’s metro towns. You will see road-light lines spreading to the east and south from the river.

  • Cordillera sits east of Central. The mountain town of Caacupé is marked and is easy to pick out along the Asunción to the inland corridor.

  • Caaguazú lies farther east. Coronel Oviedo stands exactly where the central east–west highway and north–south routes meet.

  • Guairá is south of Caaguazú. The map shows Villarrica as the seat on the rolling hills.

  • Paraguarí is just south of the Central department. The town of Paraguarí sits on the route toward the south.

Southern departments on the Paraná and Paraguay rivers

  • Itapúa fills the southeast corner along the Paraná. Encarnación is a large river city located on the border with Posadas in Argentina.

  • Alto Paraná is northeast of Itapúa along the Paraná. Ciudad del Este is visible as the big border city near the Brazil crossing. Nearby river towns line the highway west toward Coronel Oviedo.

  • Caazapá lies between Guairá and Itapúa. The label Caazapá shows the quiet interior seat.

  • Misiones stretches along the lower Paraná. The town of San Juan Bautista is located inland from the river.

  • Ñeembucú holds the southwest corner along the Paraguay and Paraná confluence. The river city of Pilar faces Formosa and Corrientes across the water.

Follow Road-Light Corridors and Borders

Main corridors you can trace on the image

  • Trans Chaco run: from Asunción across the bridge into Presidente Hayes, through Villa Hayes, then west to Pozo Colorado, and on to Mariscal Estigarribia in Boquerón. This spine serves Alto Paraguay through feeders to Fuerte Olimpo and ranch tracks on the frontier.

  • Capital to Concepción: follow the Paraguay River north along the red line that passes small river ports and ends at Concepción.

  • Capital to Ciudad del Este: leave Asunción east through Cordillera at Caacupé, continue to Coronel Oviedo in Caaguazú, and roll to Ciudad del Este in Alto Paraná on the Paraná River.

  • Capital to Encarnación: head south through Paraguarí, cross Misiones past San Juan Bautista, and finish at Encarnación in Itapúa, facing Argentina.

  • Northern arc: from Concepción east to San Pedro, then to Salto del Guairá in Canindeyú, with a branch north to Pedro Juan Caballero in Amambay.

Rivers as guidelines

  • The Paraguay River divides the country. The Chaco is on the west bank. Asunción and most of the population are on the east bank.

  • Paraná River draws the curved east and south border from Ciudad del Este down to Encarnación and toward Ñeembucú.

  • The Pilcomayo River marks the southwest line with Argentina and flows into the Paraguay near the capital region.

  • The Apa River forms part of the Brazil boundary north of Amambay and Concepción.

Borders shown on the map

  • Argentina appears to the south and southwest with provinces labeled Formosa, Chaco, Corrientes, and Misiones.

  • Brazil appears to the north and east with Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná across the line.

  • Bolivia lies to the northwest of the dry Chaco.

How to use the labels

Look for big department names to fix your position, then use the red dots to hop between towns. Junction names like Coronel Oviedo, Caacupé, Pozo Colorado, Villarrica, San Juan Bautista, Pilar, Concepción, Pedro Juan Caballero, Salto del Guairá, Ciudad del Este, and Encarnación give you an easy mental grid.
