Gambia Facts and Country Information...

Gambia is a country based in the African continent. It is the smallest country in the continent as it measures only 48 kilometers across its widest points. The country is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gambia River. The country lies between north latitude 13.5 degrees and 16.6 degrees west longitude. The country is dominated by the sub-tropical type of climate which provides two separate dry and rainy seasons.

The country has 2 main ecological regions. The grass filled Gambia River flood plains near the coast and the West Sudanian Savanna further inland. The flood plains also have Guinean Mangroves. The total area taken up by the country is a mere 11295 square kilometers of which 10000 square kilometers is land and 1295 square kilometers is occupied by water bodies.

The coastline is 80 kilometers long. Mainly low lying, the country does not have any high peaks. The Red Rock sits at 53 meters above sea level and is the highest natural peak in the country whereas the lowest point sits on the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. The Gambia is the longest river in the country and flows for 1130 kilometers before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean in the west.
