Vanuatu Facts and Country Information...

Vanuatu is an archipelago located on the South Pacific Ocean. The archipelago consists of 80 islands which cover an area of 12200 square kilometers. The islands are arranged in a the shape of the alphabet Y. The country lies between 16 degrees south latitude and 167 degrees east longitude. It is considered to be a part of the sub region of Oceania. The dominant terrain is volcanic ion origin with small and narrow coastal plains.


The highest natural peak is 1877 meters above sea level and is known as Mount Tabwemasana. The lowest point however lies at mean sea level on the Pacific Ocean. The islands have no permanent source of water in the form of rivers and lakes.


The climate at Vanuatu is hot and humid. It is mostly tropical with distinct hot and cold seasons. The average rainfall per year is approximately 94 inches. The islands have been formed due to the movement of the Pacific and Australian Tectonic Plates.


The country lies near the Pacific Ring of Fire and has 3 volcanic peaks on Lopevi, Tanna and Ambrim. The islands are surrounded by coral reefs and underwater volcanoes. The lakes present in the country are not of a significant size and this includes lakes Voui, Siwi and Manaro.
