  • Thin red lines show road-light corridors you can follow from city to city.

  • Blue labels show seas, channels, straits, lakes, and borders.

Far north at the borders with Peru and Bolivia

Tarapacá is the entry point at the top of the map. Arica sits by the Peruvian line on the coast. Iquique is farther south on a wide bay and serves as the regional center. Inland marks like Pisagua and Pampa del Tamarugal remind you that this is the Atacama Desert. A road corridor hugs the shoreline, and another cuts inland toward Bolivia.

Antofagasta follows next along the coast. The city of Antofagasta is the capital and port. North of it, you see Tocopilla. Inland, Calama appears near the high desert and the routes that lead toward Uyuni in Bolivia. The map makes it clear that the coastal road is the central north-south spine here.

Atacama begins the big turn into mining valleys. Copiapó is the regional capital, with Chañaral and Vallenar on the coast and along Route 5. You can trace the corridor that links these towns and continues into the next region.

Coasts and dry valleys give way to greener hills.

Coquimbo shows two twin cities on the shore, La Serena and Coquimbo, and Ovalle inland. This is where the map starts to show more rivers and small towns, and the road-light line continues south without gaps.

Valparaíso is the historic port region. On the map, you will see Valparaíso and Viña del Mar side by side on the coast. Inland, Quillota and San Antonio appear as road points. This region is tightly linked by short corridors that run between the bays and valleys.

The Región Metropolitana de Santiago is a compact block on the map, with the red square representing Santiago, the national capital, situated in the center of the valley. Surrounding names like Puente Alto and San Bernardo show the wider metro. From here, the corridors branch in every direction: west to Valparaíso, south to Rancagua, and north back toward La Serena.

O’Higgins (Libertador General Bernardo O’Higgins) stretches south of Santiago. The capital, Rancagua, is right on the main north-south corridor. You can also see San Fernando farther down the valley.

Maule to Biobío: the central heartland

Maule lines up a row of cities on Route 5. Talca is the capital. Curicó lies to the north and Linares to the south. The map shows how closely spaced the towns are here, which makes this section easy to follow.

Ñuble and Biobío appear together across a wider band. The city of Chillán anchors the northern part, then Los Ángeles marks the middle, and the coastal metro of Concepción is the central hub on the Pacific with Talcahuano as a port. The road network spreads from Concepción toward the coast and inland to the Andes, which you can track by the red lines and river crossings.

South and Far South: Lakes, Fjords, and the Strait

Araucanía and the lakes corridor

Araucanía features Temuco as the capital. Lakes and volcano icons cluster around Villarrica and Pucón. The north-south route keeps a steady course through Temuco and on to Valdivia.

Los Ríos shows Valdivia at the river mouth and a path south to La Unión. The map starts to show more forests and water as you move down.

Los Lagos adds the island and fjord world. Osorno sits inland. Puerto Montt appears as the regional capital of the Reloncaví Sound. To the west, you will see Isla de Chiloé with Ancud and Castro linked by a clear island corridor.

Patagonia by road and sea

Aisén (Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo) turns the landscape into deep fjords. Coyhaique is the capital inland. The famous Carretera Austral is the southbound road-light thread you can trace from Puerto Montt through Aisén to the next region. Names like Puerto Aysén and Cisnes help you follow the coastal inlets.

Magallanes y Antártica Chilena fills the far south. Punta Arenas sits on the Strait of Magellan and is the regional capital. North-west of it is Puerto Natales. Across the Estrecho de Magallanes lies Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego with the Chilean town Porvenir, while Ushuaia in Argentina is visible to the east. Smaller labels point to channels, islets, and capes that lead toward Cape Horn.

What borders does the map show

  • Peru is at the extreme north near Arica.

  • Bolivia lies along the high plateau east of Tarapacá and Antofagasta.

  • Argentina runs down the entire eastern edge beyond the Andes.

  • The Pacific Ocean fills the west with coastal city names from Arica to Punta Arenas.

Road-light spines you can follow by eye.

  • Route 5 Pan-American is the continuous north-south line that links Arica, Iquique, Antofagasta, Copiapó, La Serena, Valparaíso, Santiago, Rancagua, Talca, Chillán, Los Ángeles, Concepción, Temuco, Valdivia, Osorno, and Puerto Montt.

  • Carretera Austral continues from Puerto Montt into Aisén and toward Coyhaique.

  • Coastal connectors join Valparaíso to Viña del Mar and San Antonio, and link islands in Chiloé.
