We know that everything existing in our universe today has a cause. Take anything, whether it be you and I, or matter, or gases, or energy, or the wind, and there is a cause. Everything is dependent on something, caused by something…
We’re here because of our parents, they are here because of their parents. Trees and plants are here because of seeds. Etc. Everything is caused by a chain of events that leads back to the beginning of everything we observe in the world and the universe surrounding us.
The universe is literally impossible without a first cause (just as anything we observe today would not exist without a cause).
The first cause would logically have to be INDEPENDENT, existing in and of itself. Of course, nothing could have caused the first cause – it was in fact “uncaused“.
The first cause would also have to be ETERNAL since it had no cause – nothing came before it, and something cannot possibly come from nothing. Further, the first cause would have to “explain itself” in that nothing else could explain its existence. These factors leave only one reasonable conclusion as to what the first cause might be, and that is a supreme being … God!
We took liberties in parts 1-3 of this series by using “multiple eternal somethings” for the sake of example and argument. But could there actually be MULTIPLE first causes that have co-existed together for all eternity?… In other words, could a mixture of particles and gases and a cosmic wind really be our first causes? The answer is no. For starters, something such as a particle cannot explain itself…
Remember, ALL things observable today must have a cause – literally some explanation as to why they exist.
A FIRST cause is no different in the sense that it must have a reason – an explanation – for existing.
However, with the first cause, that explanation can come from nowhere else but the first cause itself (since an external cause CANNOT serve as the explanation)! A particle, or a gas, or a cosmic wind would have exactly ZERO explainable existence or demonstrable purpose as first causes.
Further, we can, of course, observe particles and gases and such things in various forms today, and guess what -they are all dependent on something else for their existence!
We can observe particles and matter in many forms that rely on the cause in order to exist. NEVER has any matter or gas (or anything else) been observed to be without cause!
Thus, we really only have to contend with ONE eternal something when dealing with “change, chance, and the eternal something” discussion…
And with only ONE first cause, ONE eternal something, change by chance is completely ruled out.
A first cause, existing by itself, with no outside forces or other “somethings” at work, could not CHANGE except by it’s own free will! We know that our existence was not possible without major change, and we NOW know that this change could not have come about by chance.
Pretty cool, ‘ey?
To sum our discussion up, let’s revisit the problem with impossibilities.
Impossibilities are what science unavoidably faces when trying to rationalize our origin and existence.
They inevitably come to face the impossibility of “something coming from nothing”, or “something having always existed” – or some combination thereof.
Honest logic tells us that these things will NEVER be explained (without God). They are beyond the comprehension of finite man. You can choose to believe otherwise, but doing so truly flies in the face of all logic, reason, and fact!
This might seem a naive conclusion on the surface, but stop to consider our previous empty room analogy once again.
With a completely empty room, you can wait for eons, quadrillions of years, and in fact eternity, and you will still have NOTHING within that room. It’s impossible!
We’ll also never explain or demonstrate something has always existed – since (amongst other reasons) we already have plenty of something, and thus can never “return” to nothingness!
The only logical way to explain things that are impossible in a natural sense is to go OUTSIDE of the natural! That leads us DIRECTLY to the “supernatural“…
Su-per-nat-u-ral definition:
1. of, pertaining to, or being above or beyond what is natural; unexplainable by natural law or phenomena; abnormal.
2. of, pertaining to, characteristic of, or attributed to God or a deity.
“When dealing in the realm of the physical, in the absence of natural cause, all that remains is the supernatural.”
Beyond any theory or secular explanation, the “evidence” above is all that’s needed to verify the existence of an all-powerful, supernatural being.
It’s vitally important for a man to face his limitations! We can try in vain to explain away God, but we will never do so.
