How To Remove Water From A Flooded Interior

For those who live near larger bodies of water, flooding can be a concern. In the spring and summer months, some areas receive lots of rain that can cause rivers, lakes, and big creeks to overflow. The damage can be overwhelming.

Cars, homes, and businesses can be ruined, depending on the amount of water that invades their towns. For many, this is a way of life. Precautions such as dams and aqueducts are in place to prevent water from overflowing and venturing into the streets and residential areas.

But when too much rainfall occurs, these dams cannot hold the amount of water. After the flood, there is much that will need to be cleaned up. A person’s car will need to be dried out so that one can see the extent of the damage.

There are a few ways to remove water from a flooded interior of a car. Waiting until the water level returns to normal or at least underneath the car will make removing the water much easier. Opening all the cars doors and allowing heat and air to circulate through the car is essential when trying to get the water to dry.

If there are large puddles on the floor of the car, use a bucket to remove as much water as possible. This will make the drying process much easier. Some people have small vacuums that can be used to remove the water also. Use whatever is available to get excess water out of the vehicle.

It could take a few days for the car to be completely dry. In the meantime, remove all items that can be removed such as sunglasses, paperwork from the glove compartment, and any trash or unwanted papers.

Unfortunately, most of the removable items will have to be replaced. Sometimes allowing paper to dry flat will allow it to be saved, but many times, people will have to get new insurance information and car manuals. Other items like CDs may be saved. Once the car is dry, it may smell moldy.

This is because the water has been in the car for a while and has caused bacteria to grow in the seat cushions and floor mats. Remove floor mats and clean them with a carpet cleaner. This will help combat the odor.

Depending on the kind of seats one has in their car, using a carpet cleaner to clean the seats will also help. If the car has leather seats, use a leather cleaner, and check for additional damage.

It may take a few tries to clean out a car after it has been damaged by water. Be patient and use the appropriate cleaning supplies that are meant for interiors and carpeting.

Many people have to replace floor mats. This is one way to keep odors out of the car. In some areas, flooding can occur with little or no warning. Try to keep cars in elevated areas to prevent them from getting flooded. Try to dry the car once the water has gone back down.
